Alex Lowry has Motherwell legend's shirt number and is desperate to it justice
The on-loan midfielder aims to make up for lost time at Motherwel after joining for the season from Wycombe Wanderers
Alex Lowry has got his old shirt number and now wants to follow in the footsteps of a Motherwell legend.
The midfielder, signed on-loan from Wycombe Wanderers, has taken No. 11, which was worn by Scottish Cup legend Davie Cooper.
Lowry is now hoping he can do himself and the shirt justice when he pulls on the claret and amber jersey.
Lowry said: “My childhood number growing up was always 11.
“As soon as that came about, I was like, yes, let me have that, please.
“Now I know that previous great players for the club like Davie Cooper have worn it. They have been of a really high standard and hopefully I can try and do the club proud when I wear No. 11.”
The 23-year-old is keen to make up for lost time at Fir Park. He started well at Wycombe Wanderers, but has found first-team football hard to come by since the turn of the year.
He admitted: “I’ve had a stop-start for 18 months since I went down to Wycombe.
“Now it's just about me getting my head down, football, football, football and getting myself back to the level I feel as if I should be playing at and enjoying my football again.
“That's the main thing.
“Since I've come here, I've loved coming into training every single day and I'm loving my football again.”
That is very much down to Motherwell boss Alfred Johansson.
“The type of football he likes to play is the type of football I love to play,” Lowry insisted.
“Hopefully, I can repay him with more good performances and hopefully come with more starts and more minutes and just want to help the team as much as possible.”
The former Rangers youngster made his Motherwell debut in their opening day Premiership win at Hibs. He then made his first start in Thursday’s Conference qualifier away to HJK, which ended 1-1. Lowry thinks Motherwell can finish the job at home and set-up a play-off clash with Freiburg.
He insisted: “What a game to come into.
“When we came out for the warm-up and I saw the fans in the corner, I was like, that's incredible.
“I thought we started pretty well.
“We limited them to very few chances until the second half.
“It was a strong away European performance, which is good, so now we are looking forward to the next leg.
“My last start was a long time ago, maybe January last year was my last start.
“It's been a while without football.
“Obviously, when the interest from here came, I was chomping at the bit to come.
“Watching last year, it was just incredible. I was like, yes, I want to be a part of that.”
Motherwell took the lead through a Tawanda Maswanhise before Teemu Pukki levelled. Lowry was disappointed with his part in the HJK equaliser.
He confirmed: “Yes, but European games never go as planned.
“I thought we'd done really well.
“Obviously, the ball comes over my head and I've cramped up for the start of the goal, which I'm obviously angry about.
“Again, I'm not a fan of the AstroTurf. It stops and starts again.
“It kind of kills the game a wee bit.
“Obviously, they're used to it because they play on it every week.
“For us, again, that's another thing that was against us when we came out here and we showed that we can go toe-to-toe with European teams.
“But we've put ourselves in a good position to go back to the first half next Thursday.”
Motherwell take on Falkirk at home today in the league. Lowry thinks can be an exciting time for the Lanarkshire club and for himself, personally.
Lowry stated: “Yes, I thought we were great against Hibs.
“The manager speaks about hitting teams on the counter when we can.
“I think you've seen the goal. It was a perfect counter-attack.
“It shows that we can go away from home in the Premiership, be under pressure for a bit and then hit teams on the break.
“This year, it's just a case of finishing as high as we possibly can and building on what happened last year and putting our own stamp on it.”
