Vince McMahon Weaponized Real Chaos To Create The APA

During a fan panel with The Godfather at River City Wrestling Con, JBL and Ron Simmons revealed that the beers shown during their famous APA backstage segments were not just props for the camera. JBL recalled a night at the Staples Center when producers suddenly told the duo to hurry and finish filming, and he later learned it was because they had started slurring their words on tape. Simmons laughed that neither man noticed it at the time, joking that they sounded plenty intelligent to themselves, while JBL confirmed the drinks were real and not just for show. Simmons also explained how the pairing came together in the first place, admitting that Vince McMahon simply noticed how much trouble he and JBL caused outside the ring and decided to put that same energy on television. According to Simmons, WWE barely had to script anything since their drinking and fighting were already part of daily life long before the cameras rolled. One of the wildest stories involved a bar fight in Red Deer, Canada, where JBL got surrounded by men holding knives after throwing a punch. He said Simmons sprinted across the room, grabbed a beer bottle, and stood between him and the attackers while cutting an unforgettable promo that scared the group off. JBL then recalled a separate incident at an airport, where Steve Blackman punched him roughly eighteen times after JBL pinched him as a prank, not realizing Blackman was already furious from earlier teasing. The fight spilled across baggage claim until Ken Shamrock stepped in to break it up.
