The San Francisco 49ers lost only two of their players to the waiver wire on Monday as they cut down from 53 players and settled on their practice squad. Luter was a fifth-round pick by the 49ers in the 2023 NFL Draft, and he made the 49ers 53-man roster in each of the first three years of his NFL career. While injuries were prevalent earlier in his career, Luter played in all 17 games last year, starting three, while playing a key role on special teams. The 49ers ended up keeping six cornerbacks, but Luter wasn’t one of them. Instead, they had Deommodore Lenoir, Renardo Green, Upton Stout, Jack Jones, Ephysians Prysock, and Nate Hobbs make the 53-man roster. Green, Prysock, and Hobbs are all dealing with injuries, and Hobbs was reverted to Injured Reserve with a designation to return after making the initial 53. Perhaps the 49ers were hoping to bring back Luter on the practice squad, but he was actually the most-claimed player on the waiver wire on Monday, and it wasn’t close. While the Raiders, who had top priority, submitted only one waiver claim overall, the Tennessee Titans, Miami Dolphins, Dallas Cowboys, and Indianapolis Colts all attempted to claim Luter as well. No other player who was waived had more than two claims on them by a team, according to ESPN’s Field Yates. Luter ended up with a clear chance to play early on the Raiders, while the 49ers signed back Jakob Robinson to the practice squad as the lone additional cornerback. With their current injury situation, the 49ers may need to add another body ahead of Week 1 for practice situations, but their 2023 fifth-round pick is no longer on the roster following another busy cutdown day.
