How one Huddersfield Town goal turned Laura into a Terrier and helped spark a YouTube career - Huddersfield Hub

A Huddersfield Town goal changed the course of Laura Sinderson’s life. She had little interest in football when she met Arsenal supporter Euan Kane and found having Soccer Saturday on television more irritating than exciting. Then, in 2011, Euan suggested she choose a club to support while they were watching the live results show. Then Town scored almost at once. “It started as almost a random pick, but it didn’t stay that way,” said Laura, who lives with Euan in Immingham, Lincolnshire. “I was complaining that we had to watch football. Every time I came to see him, football was on and I was irritated. “He said: ‘Pick a team and you’ll probably like it.’ Huddersfield scored at that point, so I said: ‘Alright, I’ll have a look into this and see what I think.’” Laura began learning about the club, its players and its history. The choice soon became a genuine attachment. “The more I learned about the club, I realised it was an amazing place,” she said. “There is such a bond with the fans and it has such a crazy history. I thought: ‘This is actually amazing.’ It built from there.” Laura, who works in retail, has since watched Town home and away. Her first match was at Hull and she’s toured the Accu Stadium, along with trips to see the Terriers play across the country. Their first visit to Wembley was Town’s 2017 Championship play-off final against Reading, when David Wagner’s side won promotion to the Premier League on penalties. That promotion also changed the direction of another shared interest. Laura and Euan had previously collected Pokémon cards, but started buying ‘Match Attax’ packs in the hope of finding Huddersfield players after Town reached the top flight. Their football card and sticker collection grew steadily, and they launched Football Collecting Couple on YouTube in November 2017. The channel now has more than 64,000 subscribers, more than 2,000 videos and over 31 million views. Their videos largely feature pack openings and conversations about football cards, stickers and collecting. The hobby has become a source of income and a massive part of their lives, with Euan going full-time to manage their various channels and keep on top of the collection. Laura’s Huddersfield cards are not the most expensive that they own, but some are scarce. She owns several cards released during Town’s Premier League seasons with print runs of about 40, along with signed cards and a Pro 11 card she earned by playing a digital game. The couple’s split loyalties have created a few awkward moments. They watched Town play Arsenal in Huddersfield during the club’s time in the Premier League, with Euan wearing an Arsenal shirt beneath another top while sitting in the home end. “He still celebrated his goals, though, which was a bit rude,” Laura said. “Only mildly. He did it secretly…” The couple spoke to Huddersfield Hub ahead of Topps launching its new Premier League Flagship collection, with rookie cards of players yet to make a senior appearance expected to attract interest from collectors searching for rare finds. The collection also features 20 cards containing 24-karat gold, which are expected to command significant prices. For Laura, though, the story still comes back to Huddersfield Town. A club chosen because of one well-timed goal introduced her to football and helped inspire a hobby which became central to the couple’s relationship and their work.
