Last season was finally a breath of fresh air for Jonathan Kuminga, as he was traded from the Golden State Warriors to the Atlanta Hawks. It was a great opportunity for the former NBA champion to get a fresh start elsewhere. The 23-year-old had a team option for this season, but the Hawks decided it was best to decline it. “The Atlanta Hawks are declining Jonathan Kuminga's $24.3 million team option, making him a free agent. Kuminga, who will turn 24 before next season, played in 16 regular-season games for the Hawks after joining the team via trade in February, averaging 12.3 points and 5.3 rebounds in 22.1 minutes,” ESPN wrote. In a recent interview on the Kevin O’Connor Show, Kuminga’s agent, Matt Turner, said that his client was the best player for Atlanta last season. “He was their best player from the moment he showed up in terms of winning impact. He had the best on/off net rating … These are facts. These aren't opinions,” Turner said. The comment came as somewhat of a surprise when discussing Kuminga’s brief time with the Hawks. However, it did not hold up well after NBA insider Brett Siegel examined Kuminga’s numbers in Atlanta and pushed back on the claim. “From the time he was traded from the Warriors to the Hawks through the end of the regular season, Jonathan Kuminga ranked 6th on the Hawks in plus-minus. He ranked 5th in total net rating from Feb 24 through the end of the regular season and 9th on the team in the playoffs,” Siegel posted. Turner’s comment continues to look questionable, especially considering Kuminga did not rank in the top three among his own teammates in the categories Siegel highlighted. Kuminga’s name is now being dragged into the spotlight because of several comments his agent has made since he agreed to a deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Kuminga’s agent continues to draw attention for all the wrong reasons. The bigger issue is that Turner helped his client pass up a more lucrative offer from the Lakers, and now he is taking significant chances with every public appearance and comment.
