A teen busker who has become a familiar face in Huddersfield town centre is picking up lots of gigs. Tyrus Holder is just 16 yet has built up a repertoire of almost 100 songs and also writes his own. He’s known for busking in the town centre near to Kingsgate and is now regularly playing solo gigs and will be performing at HuddersFeast live entertainment and food event in St Peter’s Gardens on the weekend of August 22 and 23 where he will play on the Sunday. Tyrus, of Stocksmoor, has just finished at Shelley College and is now going to Greenhead College to study A-levels in music technology and combined English alongside a B-Tech in music performance. “I’ve been around music all my life,’’ he said. “I started guitar lessons when I was seven and joined Huddersfield Choral Young Voices when I was eight. “I just love music, especially making people feel happy while playing it. It’s great when people stop and singalong when I’m busking.’’ Tyrus sometimes busks with his girlfriend Olivia Roberts from Flockton. He added: “We do similar sort of music as I do myself but we like to make it our own and add plenty of harmonies on top.’’ Tyrus’ repertoire ranges from The Beatles and Elvis to Madness, Franz Ferdinand and Sam Fender and he slips a few of his own compositions into his set too. “I try to make all the covers my own by giving them an indie feel,’’ he said. “My ultimate ambition is to forge a career in music as a solo artist.’’ Tyrus first started performing in public about 18 months ago by going to open mic nights at venues such as Northern Quarter in Huddersfield town centre. Since then he’s been booked for pubs and festivals such as Farnley Festival, Brockfest in Brockholes, Clayton West Cricket Club and pubs including The Railway in Berry Brow – renowned for its live music – along with The Secret Garden in Kirkburton and the White Swan in Highburton. He’ll also be performing at Longwood Sing which will be held at St Mark’s Church in Longwood on Sunday, September 13 from 2.30pm to 5pm and the ArtattheHouse arts festival at Cliffe House in Shepley on the weekend of September 19 and 20. Tyrus, who lives with parents Helen and Freddy and 14-year-old sister Agnes, plays football for Cumberworth Junior Football Club and is also a keen runner.
