Toronto FC transferring Canadian forward Deandre Kerr to Portugal’s AVS Futebol: Bogert After four years with the Toronto FC first team, TFC Academy graduate Deandre Kerr is heading to Portugal. MLS insider Tom Bogert reported Tuesday that Kerr is set to make a transfer deadline day move to AVS Futebol SAD in Portugal’s second tier. The club were in the top flight Primeira Liga last season but finished last and were relegated to Liga Portugal 2, and are signing Kerr in hopes of bouncing back up to the first division. Kerr has not played for TFC since the end of July, officially listed as out with a lower body injury. Head coach Robin Fraser expected Kerr to be back in training this week, but it turns out general manager Jason Hernandez had other ideas. There has been no reporting yet on a potential fee for the 23-year-old Canadian youth international, or if there might be a corresponding move to bolster TFC’s roster ahead of a big playoff push. The Portuguese transfer window closes on Sept. 15, so there is still time for that deal to be confirmed, but the MLS window closes on Wednesday. He joined the TFC Academy in 2018, playing there until 2020 before going to Syracuse University for two seasons of NCAA soccer. The Reds brought him back north of the border in 2022, signing him to a homegrown MLS contract, and he went on to make 115 first team appearances, scoring 21 goals and adding a pair of assists. Kerr had a knack for scoring in the Canadian Championship in particular, hitting the back of the net six times in eight games, including four goals in an 8-1 victory over semi-pro side CS Saint-Laurent in 2024. He won the CanChamp once with Toronto FC, the 2020 edition that was actually played in 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. More to come.
