Joe Milton has generated a lot of NFL hype ever since he flashed his tantalizing skill set in the 2024 preseason. Yet, now he may be looking for his third team in as many seasons after the Dallas Cowboys released him after yet another highlight-worthy exhibition display. It’s possible Milton will land back with the Cowboys’ practice squad. Yet, there’s enough buzz generating around the 26-year-old rocket-armed mobile QB that it’s possible he lands with a different organization too. So, with all the Milton rumors circulating, which team could the former New England Patriots and Cowboys QB join next? Here’s a quick list of six potential opportunities for the former sixth-round pick. In fact, one might argue they’d be better off ditching the 24-year-old Cook in favor of Milton because the latter has a higher ceiling. It’s a boom-or-bust league, and the Dolphins can afford to take a few swings on potential. Undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels is a good find, but if something happens to Mayfield, is the first-year player ready to lead this team to victory? While Milton would have to learn the offense first, he may be better equipped to lead a productive passing attack in Tampa Bay this year, and he may still develop into a starting option for the future too. New York Jets Surprisingly, the New York Jets kept just two QBs in the organization, a 35-year-old Geno Smith and a 22-year-old fourth-round rookie Cade Klubnik. That’s it. For an organization still seeking its future franchise QB, that’s a bit thin. Yet, the Jets may have been hoping to sneak Cook onto the practice squad before the Dolphins swooped in and offered him a roster spot instead. However, now they can upgrade by adding an arm with a higher ceiling in Milton. Los Angeles Chargers Trey Lance seemed to have barely beaten DJ Uiagalelei for the backup job behind Justin Herbert, which could be an indication that Jim Harbaugh isn’t thrilled with his depth on the Los Angeles Chargers. Meanwhile, he and offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel could see the potential of someone like Milton in their offense. The mobility, combined with the big arm, almost makes him a poor version of Herbert. Now, if only the Chargers could help him be more accurate and consistent too, they may have an exciting backup who can bring more to the table than Lance can. Detroit Lions The Detroit Lions were willing to spend a third-round pick on Tennessee QB Hendon Hooker. That didn’t work out, yet they’ve clearly closely evaluated Milton, a fellow Volunteers grad, too. The only other QB on the roster besides Jared Goff is Josh Dobbs, and he just signed with the team in August. Yet, Lions GM Brad Holmes hasn’t been afraid to take chances on high-potential QBs, and he could see the upside here with Milton too. Green Bay Packers Now that the Green Bay Packers traded away their 23-year-old developmental QB in McCord, it’s time to add someone else who Matt LaFleur can develop into something tangible. If he could do it with Malik Willis when not even the QB-thirsty Tennessee Titans thought he had what it takes, perhaps they can work wonders with Milton too. After all, if the Packers can help Milton too, it could lead to even more future draft capital, either via compensatory picks or by the front office negotiating another trade.
