The Green-and-Whites’ U17s remain unbeaten in the DFB Youth League. Christian Stegmaier’s side drew 1-1 (0-1) away to Hansa Rostock on Saturday lunchtime. Younes Mhana secured a point for his team with an equaliser shortly before the final whistle (90’+4). In the Group A table, VfL moved above Hamburger SV and into first place for the time being. Host of big chances missed After two successful away games in Berlin, VfL once again established a clear advantage from the outset, this time on the Baltic coast. As expected, Hansa kept things tight and made life difficult for the Green-and-Whites with their compact shape. After a number of VfL attacks had already broken down, some of them unnecessarily, the task became considerably more difficult when Rostock scored out of nowhere to make it 1-0 and almost added a second shortly afterwards. VfL remained in control throughout but were unable to overcome their lack of composure in front of goal. Either side of half-time, and particularly in the second half, the young Wolves passed up a number of chances, including several clear-cut opportunities. Nevertheless, the Green-and-Whites kept pushing relentlessly until the end and were fully deserving of at least an equaliser when substitute Mhana got a shot away following a corner and found the far corner from the edge of the box (90’+4). “Says a lot about us as a team” Christian Stegmaier: “We were far too imprecise at the start and simply weren’t finding our men with the ball in the box. Even so, we created plenty of chances and dictated the tempo of the game throughout. It’s disappointing that we didn’t win despite being so dominant. But the boys didn’t lose their heads. The fact that we kept believing right until the end says a lot about us as a team.
