Zion Suzuki spoke about his debut for Aston Villa after a 1-0 loss against Arsenal on Monday.
The camp collectively knew that they needed to give their fans something to smile about at Villa Park after going four goals down and falling a man behind in the first 40 minutes against Brighton at the Amex Stadium on opening matchday. And they were not blown away easily by the champions.
·‘My strengths are to be confident and to play and help the team’
The Japanese shot stopper set out to play his part in his first minutes for his new club, pointing out the role that Unai Emery mapped out for him as the first player to support the side’s buildup structure.
In terms of fundamentals of defensive solidity, he helped the Villans limit the threat from the guests to two efforts on target— but it was still enough for Bukayo Saka to score the only goal of the game.
“First of all, I’m so disappointed with the result. We wanted to pick up the win, but we lost. After the game against Brighton, we wanted to bounce back, but in the end, we lost the game, so it was a disappointing result.
“Our structure, our defensive line is a bit higher, so I need to help the defensive line.
“I tried to help the team in the defensive line and this game, every defender threw their body out and there were only two shots on target, but we conceded the goal. I could have done something, so I want to get better.
“[Distribution] is something I think (is) my strength, so I want to make some chances from my feet.
“I just want to help the team. My strengths are to be confident and to play and help the team, so I want to keep improving. Also, the manager wants my kicks, but I couldn’t connect to their goal, so next time I want to help the team to create some chances from my feet.”
