During Monday night's broadcast of the series opener between the Reds and the San Diego Padres at the Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, it was revealed that Suarez will miss the final two games of the series to take the naturalization test that will pave the way for him to become a United States citizen. The 35-year-old Suarez is Venezuelan and was even part of Venezuela's gold-winning squad in the 2026 edition of the World Baseball Classic. Suarez is leaving the Reds temporarily on a sour note, as he went hitless on three at-bats while striking out twice in Monday's 5-0 loss to the Padres. On the season, the two-time All-Star is batting just .206/.298/.410 with 20 home runs. It hasn't been a great season thus far for Suarez, who slashed .228/.298/.526 with 49 home runs and 118 RBIs for the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Seattle Mariners. Suarez and TJ Friedl remain with the Reds after recently clearing waivers after being put on outright waivers by Cincinnati. That means the two will finish the campaign in Cincy colors. Given the timeline of his absence, Suarez can be expected back in the Reds' lineup on Friday, when they begin a new series against NL Central rivals Milwaukee Brewers at the Great American Ball Park.
