Lewis Hamilton has taken ownership of a Ferrari F40 road car after it sat dormant in a garage for over 30 years. The iconic supercar was in production from 1987 to 1992, with roughly 1,315 examples rolling out of Maranello's factory gates in that period. Although Hamilton has been a Ferrari Formula 1 driver for over 18 months, he has been waiting for the perfect F40 to invest in and appears to have found a rare low-mileage example. The seven-time champion's time at Maranello is already synonymous with the car after he posed for a photo with one on his arrival at Ferrari at the start of 2025. He also posted a video of himself driving a Japanese-based F40 at a Tokyo car meet earlier this year. Posting on Instagram on Monday, Hamilton introduced the car as his "very own F40," adding "this is the car of my dreams." Hamilton has owned numerous expensive cars over the years, but in 2025 revealed he had sold his collection which, at various times, included a one-off Pagani Zonda 760 LH, a Ferrari LaFerrari and a 1966 Shelby Cobra. Speaking at last year's Azerbaijan Grand Prix, he said he was "more into art" than cars but would still consider an F40, which Hamilton described as "a piece of art." Ferrari F40s have been known to gather prices in excess of $8 million at auction, but values vary based on condition, mileage and specification. The V8-turbo supercar is significant in the brand's history as it was the last of its road cars to be commissioned and approved by founder Enzo Ferrari before his death in 1988. Original owners include F1 legends Niki Lauda, Jacky Ickx, Gerhard Burger, John Surtees and Striling Moss. Hamilton's former on track rival, Sebastian Vettel, owned an F40 that previously belonged to Luciano Paravrotti, although he reportedly sold it after he left the Italian team in 2020, saying he wanted more "space." It remains to be seen whether Hamilton will arrive at this weekend's Italian Grand Prix in his freshly restored F40.
