Sunderland transfer news: Toulouse chief breaks silence on Dayann Methalie talks and explains latest
Sunderland are working hard to try and strengthen their squad ahead of the new campaign
Toulouse president Olivier Cloarec has confirmed that the club are in negotiations with Sunderland regarding the sale of Dayann Methalie but says no agreement has been reached at this stage.
The 20-year-old has emerged as a key target for the Black Cats, who are looking to sign a new left back following Dennis Cirkin's departure. It's understood that Methalie is keen on a move to Wearside, with the framework of a five-year deal in place. However, the two clubs remain locked in negotiations over a fee with the Ligue 1 club eager to bank an even greater fee than the roughly €30 million deal (including add-ons) that saw young striker Emersonn move to Ipswich Town earlier this summer.
In an interview with French outlet RMC, Cloarec said the club did not want to sell Methalie but that at a certain point the offer would be too good for the club to refuse.
"Dayann is one of the players who are very much in demand this summer, as well as others," he said.
"We talk a lot about Dayann, but there are others who are very much in demand too. There are discussions with Sunderland and interest from others club. Today, we are discussing with Sunderland but there is no agreement between the two clubs.
"We've been discussing with Sunderland for three or four weeks so Dayann's starting amount has been fixed for three weeks and a month," he added.

“After Dayann it's like Emerson... that is it's two players on whom we were absolutely counting on for this year's project, with contracts that are quite long. After that, the market makes it so that when you get to a certain amount, not to sell the player would be a management mistake. So, basically, Emerson and Dayann are players we're counting on... They're not for sale but we know in football when you get to a certain amount you have to transition and then change your mind."
Speaking from the club's pre-season camp in the US earlier on Wednesday, Sunderland head coach Régis Le Bris opted not to comment and said the club were determined to work under the radar this summer amid fierce competition for targets.
