Tonda Eckert praised Southampton for the “mature performance” that secured a 2-0 win at Colchester in the first round of the Carabao Cup. Saints required a triple save from goalkeeper Daniel Peretz to stop the League Two hosts scoring before the break. But it was a different story in the second half, with Cyle Larin, set up by Ryan Manning, heading home at the back post and fellow substitute Romeo Akachukwu making sure in stoppage-time when sent through by Finn Azaz. Head coach Eckert said: “It was a very professional and mature performance. Colchester didn’t make it easy for us. “We needed sharpness, patience and quality, and we had that in the end, even if it didn’t flow from the first minute. “It is important that we can rely on the whole squad, with players contributing from the bench. That is what makes us strong.” Colchester manager Danny Cowley was encouraged by his side’s performance. “First half we had the best chances against one of the best Championship teams for sure,” he said. “I loved the belief we showed. “I’m not a guy who is into valiant defeats but I am into valiant performances. The effort, attitude and mentality of the group was really strong.” Akachukwu is a former Colchester player, having spent the second half of last season on loan there. “It was a good day for Akachukwu,” said Eckert. “I have never seen him give so many interviews!” “It was a really good finish,” Cowley added of the 20-year-old’s goal. “I used to like him but I don’t anymore…”
