Just days before the FIBA Women’s World Cup kickoff, A'ja Wilson and Kelsey Plum have been announced to miss the Team USA roster due to health reasons. Alexa Philippou of ESPN recently broke the news on her X, formerly Twitter account. “Breaking: Kelsey Plum and A’ja Wilson will no longer compete for Team USA at the upcoming FIBA Women's World Cup due to health reasons, USA Basketball announced. The Mystics' Kiki Iriafen and Sonia Citron have been named to the roster in their place,” she wrote. However, according to the latest update, Kiki Iriafen and Sonia Citron will be the replacements for the veteran players set to miss the WC. While Iriafen has already played for Team USA during the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Tournament in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Citron is set to make her national team debut. Technically, the Washington Mystics guard has played for USA Basketball, but it was for the U19 World Cup Team back in December last year when she participated in the national team training camp. She also won a gold medal with the team. The latest update comes as a blow for Team USA, which has been the favorite to win the World Cup. The festivities will take place in Berlin, Germany, where Max-Schmeling-Halle and Uber Arena will be the two venues to host the games. A total of 16 teams will be there for the FIBA World Cup, with the tournament starting Friday, September 4. The Finals are scheduled to take place on Sunday, September 13.
