West Brom head coach James Morrison has promised to keep pushing Jimmy-Jay Morgan to get better despite his double as they swept aside Rotherham 4-1.
An upset never looked on the cards as West Brom, two divisions higher than the Millers, showed the gulf in class.
Summer signing Morgan got up and running in Albion colours by diverting Harry Whitwell’s shot home.
Whitwell added a second himself after he tapped in the rebound from Morgan’s shot.
Another new man, Felix Horn Myhre, put Albion further ahead early in the second half.
Morgan grabbed his second when he headed in from Callum Styles’ centre.
Fabio Tavares got a consolation goal for the Millers.
Morrison said of Morgan: “I am really pleased with him but I still need to be on him.
“There are times where he’s daydreaming and he needs to be in the game all the time.
“But we can see his qualities and he is only going to get better.
“No disrespect but they struggled to get near us at times.
“In the back of my head I know Norwich will be a miles tougher test.
“The intensity from this game will go up and we have got to be ready.”
Rotherham’s new head coach Alex Bruce admitted it was a rough first game in management.
Bruce said: “It was a tough afternoon. I’m not going to sugar-coat it.
“West Brom showed their class and their quality. Thankfully we won’t come up against them most weeks.
“There were some parts of the game that pleased me.”
