Omari Hutchinson is a signing that has raised some eyebrows, but AC Milan see him as a very useful wild card for Ruben Amorim. In the afternoon, he will visit Casa Milan to sign a contract spanning one year plus an additional three. He arrives on a paid loan deal (worth €3.5m), with Milan holding an option to purchase him for a fee close to €50m. He will wear the number 20 shirt, the same number he wore during his two years at Ipswich Town and reclaimed at Nottingham Forest in recent weeks. Consequently, the number 10 shirt – vacated by Rafael Leão -r emains available. Had he not already played wearing number 14, Modrić would likely have taken it, but the Croatian player cannot change numbers now. In theory, Christian Pulisic could switch (having never worn the No.10), but the American has shown no such intention so far. Added versatility Hutchinson offers an alternative option for the right-sided attacking midfield role, possessing technical attributes distinct from those of Adrien Rabiot and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who play the position with a more physical approach. The left-footed Englishman will look to capitalise on his ability to cut inside and shoot. He should not be viewed as a replacement for Leão, as the Portuguese would have played on the left side, an area covered by Pulisic, Alphadjo Cissé and, if necessary, Alexis Saelemaekers. Omari wanted the Rossoneri to challenge himself and revitalise his career in a league different from the Premier League. He has already spoken by phone with Amorim, who explained how he intends to use him. The coach is intrigued by his ability to handle the ball in tight spaces and his willingness to press. The deal with Nottingham, structured with an option to buy, allows Milan to avoid the risk of a massive investment in a player whom Marinakis’s club paid €45m for last summer. He is a player whose market appeal inevitably dipped after a season that did not yield the hoped-for results. If Hutchinson returns to his best form, the Diavolo will seriously consider buying him outright, as he represents a player to build around given he is still young (23). There is full agreement on his signing, with Amorim keen to welcome him and the transfer team giving the green light. The squad are training at Milanello this morning, so he will meet his new team-mates in the coming days. As he does not hold an EU passport, he will have to return to the UK to secure his residence permit, but the paperwork will be finalised in time for him to be available on Sunday against Juventus. With Hutchinson’s signing, Milan believe their incoming transfer business is complete. That is, of course, unless a significant opportunity arises during the final two days (or less) of the transfer window.
