Jeremy Jacquet was still absent from team training as Liverpool resumed work at the AXA Training Centre on Wednesday – four days before the visit of Monaco. Jacquet is yet to be involved in any of Liverpool’s warmup friendlies this summer as a cautious approach is taken with the £60 million signing. After missing the second half of his final season at Rennes due to shoulder surgery, the 21-year-old began full training early in pre-season before then dropping out. With Liverpool returning to Merseyside following their tour of the United States, the situation remains the same when it comes to Jacquet. A 27-man squad were put through their paces on the outdoor pitches at the AXA on Wednesday, with the new No. 5 instead limited to individual work. That naturally makes him a doubt for Sunday’s friendly against Monaco at Anfield, though his exact situation is as yet unclear. Virgil van Dijk and Ifeanyi Ndukwe were the only specialist centre-backs in full training upon Liverpool’s return from America, with Mor Talla Ndiaye instead rejoining the U21s. Luke Chambers remains available and could be asked to fill in again, with the natural left-back impressing alongside Ndukwe while on tour. Ndiaye’s absence could suggest a confidence in Jacquet’s fitness in the coming days, though there is every chance Van Dijk and Ndukwe start at centre-back next time out. Wataru Endo may be considered as another option having returned to training, while Stefan Bajcetic, Ryan Gravenberch and Kostas Tsimikas also have experience at centre-back but are more likely to be required in their usual roles. Andoni Iraola remains without the injured Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni, with neither set to be available for the start of the campaign proper. Furthermore, with Ndukwe not qualifying for a UK work permit the Austrian will also not be available against Newcastle on August 23 – instead, he will head out on loan elsewhere in Europe. Liverpool open to signing new ‘hybrid’ defender Liverpool are understood to be exploring the market for a defender capable of operating at both centre-back and right-back, but will be limited in their options. That is particularly so with only one non-homegrown slot available in the Premier League squad at this stage and Bradley Barcola set to take that up if he makes a proposed move from Paris Saint-Germain. A homegrown-eligible addition would be the ideal solution for Liverpool but there are few on the market: Aston Villa‘s Ezri Konsa, AC Milan‘s Fikayo Tomori and Chelsea‘s Josh Acheampong could, however, be of interest.
