Deion Sanders will have a busy schedule for a while now that the college football season has officially begun. The Hall of Famer is currently the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, and has to prepare the team for the games ahead. However, he is also facing another situation in his family. His son Shilo Sanders is the subject of a bankruptcy case, and Deion has also become involved in it. Deion Sanders must appear for testimony virtually in son’s bankruptcy case A federal bankruptcy judge has ordered Deion to remain available to testify virtually in his son Shilo Sanders’ Chapter 7 bankruptcy trial. Judge Michael E. Romero set the potential testimony for 1:30 p.m. MT on September 4, 2026, one day after Colorado’s season opener against Georgia Tech. Deion’s son Shilo filed for bankruptcy in 2023 seeking to discharge an $11.89 million default judgment entered against him in 2022. The judgment stems from a 2015 incident at a Dallas school in which he was accused of assaulting security guard John Darjean. Shilo did not appear for the civil trial, resulting in the default award. The bankruptcy trial has been scheduled from August 31 through September 4 in Denver, and will determine whether the debt arose from a “willful and malicious” injury, which would prevent discharge. Deion’s attorney Harvey Steinberg had sought to quash the subpoena, citing the coach’s responsibilities and the team’s travel schedule for the Georgia Tech game. Romero rejected a full exemption but allowed virtual appearance after the game, which was offered by the attorney. Testimony would occur only if Shilo’s counsel opens the door to prior statements by Deion regarding an earlier related matter. Steinberg has indicated he does not expect Deion to have to give his testimony, but he has to appear virtually nevertheless. Deion previously addressed the court battle where he defended his son. Deion Sanders talks about son’s bankruptcy case In a press conference back in August 2026, Deion talked about Shilo’s bankruptcy case. He claimed that his son had already won the case and that he was even awarded money. He said, “You know Shilo won this case previously, right? Anybody know that? Raise your hand if you know that, if you knew that, that Shilo got awarded money for this. OK… Just check it out. I can’t wait till it’s over and he gets to tell his story. He already won this case, you know? Yeah.” However, Shilo lost the case by default judgement when he failed to appear in court. It is unclear as to which case Deion was referring to, as he could be talking about another case that his son won. It remains to be seen what new developments in this case occurs, and how Deion Sanders will manage it in a hectic week.
