ZAGREB, 30 August 2026 – Authorities in Zagreb have introduced urgent additional measures to control mosquitoes after the West Nile virus was confirmed in dead crows found in several parts of the Croatian capital.
The confirmation has prompted the city and public health authorities to intensify mosquito-control measures in areas where infected birds were discovered.
According to the Nastavni zavod za javno zdravstvo Dr Andrija Štampar, emergency measures will target both mosquito larvae in potential breeding sites and adult mosquitoes, Jutarnji list writes.
The Croatian Veterinary Institute confirmed the presence of the virus in five analysed dead crows. The first confirmed case was recorded on 27 August in a crow found in Zapruđe, followed by four further positive birds found in different parts of Zagreb, including around Kvaternik Square and Dubrava.
The West Nile virus is primarily transmitted through mosquito bites. Birds can carry the virus, while mosquitoes can acquire it when feeding on infected birds and subsequently transmit it to people or other animals.
Residents have been advised to remove standing water from gardens, yards and other areas around homes where mosquitoes could breed. The public health authorities have also recommended appropriate clothing and the use of mosquito repellents.
The latest developments come after reports that four people were being treated for West Nile virus in Zagreb, with two receiving intensive care, according to Croatian media.
Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation and are asking residents to report dead birds to the appropriate veterinary or agricultural authorities.
The development represents another reminder of the importance of mosquito surveillance in urban areas during the summer months, particularly as warmer conditions can support mosquito populations.
