Sheffield Wednesday manager Henrik Pedersen praised his team’s performance after they beat Championship side Bolton 1-0 in the Carabao Cup first round. Substitute Jamal Lowe scored in the 70th minute. Bolton had Xavier Simons sent off in the 56th minute when he received a red card after clashing with Harry Gray. Pedersen said: “I’m really pleased. I saw a lot of steps in the right direction for our aggressive pressing, for our quick transition, more players higher up when we won the ball, more forward mindset. “I saw a team when we generally were on the ball that we have less backwards passes, less sideways passes. “We keep on going, and they keep on working as a group. It means everything in this situation where we are, that we have to learn to win and find a way to win.” Bolton boss Steven Schumacher was left to rue some missed opportunities, saying that he felt they were “much the better team”. Schumacher said: “Disappointed to lose the tie, especially in the manner that we did. “I felt we were the better team, much the better team, up until the red card. So it’s had a massive impact on the game. “It looks like Xav has reacted and lashed out. It’s a poor decision and it’s a decision that you wouldn’t expect from him. “We had three big chances in the first half where we should be out of sight, so that’s on us to be more clinical with the opportunities.”
