He struggled to establish himself at senior level and somewhat controversially, the towering centre-back was allowed to join Toulouse for a reported £3.8m in 2024. Charlie Cresswell makes high-profile move After two stellar seasons in Ligue 1, Cresswell has sealed a move to Toulouse’s domestic rivals Rennes. He has joined on a loan deal containing an obligation to buy. The deal that will see Cresswell become a permanent member of the Rennes squad next year is worth around €28m (£23.9m), according to The Athletic. It has been widely reported that Leeds inserted a 15 per cent sell-on fee into the deal that sent Cresswell to Toulouse in 2024. The Premier League club will, therefore, be entitled to a slice of the fee being forked out by Rennes. ‘Truly delighted’ After being unveiled by Rennes, Cresswell said: "There has been a lot of talk about my move to Rennes over the past few weeks. It’s fantastic to finally be here and see the deal go through. I am truly delighted. “I spent two wonderful years in Toulouse - I couldn't have asked for better - but football moves in cycles, and the prospect of playing in Europe was a compelling reason to make the move. The club has an exciting project and, I believe, an excellent squad this year. I hope we can achieve great things together.” Arnaud Pouille, Rennes’ executive president and CEO, added: “We are delighted to welcome Charlie, whose arrival has been anticipated for several weeks. “His personal qualities and footballing ability had long been identified by all the club's sporting departments. Charlie and his family were quick to embrace the Rennes project, despite significant interest from other clubs. It is a real pleasure to finally welcome him among his new teammates just weeks before the start of the season.”
