Summer signing Mason Burstow started in the lone striker role but Lowe came off the bench in the second-half and scored the winner minutes later in a 1-0 win for Sheffield Wednesday against 10-man Bolton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup first round. Lowe timed his run perfectly to collect Barry Bannan’s pass and lift the ball over goalkeeper Jack Bonham with 20 minutes remaining. Lowe was a regular starter in a threadbare squad last season but competition for places is stronger this term. Owls boss Henrik Pedersen said: “I said to all the boys, we have some basics, and the basics have to be done every day when it's raining, when it's a good pitch, when a bad pitch. And today, we saw this basics. Everything was not perfect, but everything was in a right direction from playing style, from culture, and Jamal was one of them who showed this.” Bolton were reduced to 10-men with just over half an hour to play when Xavier Simons had a needless off-the-ball dig at Harry Gray and he was shown a straight red card. On the incident, Pedersen said: “I just saw that he did something, and then it looked for me that he faced him, but I have not seen that again.” New addition Billy Mitchell was absent from the matchday squad due to an injury suffered at Oldham Athletic last weekend. Fellow new signing Ricardo Santos was named on the bench but did not feature. Pedersen added: “I hope that through next week we'll have a full squad, but we have to train now. I hope Billy can train in the beginning of the week. Ricardo has trained through the week.”
