Jack Moylan scored the winner on his Cardiff debut as the Championship new boys squeezed into the second round of the Carabao Cup with a 3-2 win over League Two's Swindon.
Moylan - who joined Cardiff in midweek from Lincoln - curled in the winner in the 77th minute.
The Republic of Ireland midfielder had only come on as a substitute five minutes earlier, but he reacted quickly to finish calmly after Yousef Salech's set-up on a busy day of cup action.
Hydration breaks stopped ties on the first major weekend of the English football season.
The breaks, which were mandatory at every game at the recent World Cup in Canada, Mexico and United States and consistently booed by fans, were enacted as heat health alerts came into force around the UK.
Temperatures were close to 30 degrees Celsius in and around London and there were first-half hydration breaks in the Carabao Cup ties at Bromley, Gillingham and West Ham.
Games in the north of England were also interrupted with breaks in the Carabao Cup ties at Barnsley and Grimsby.
Limerick man Dara Costelloe was on target for Wigan in that game at Barnsley, the match ending 1-1 after 90 minutes.
Costelloe's first-half goal looked to be enough to send Wigan through until Cameron McGeehan levelled nine minutes from time to force penalties.
The first 10 spot-kicks were scored before Jon Mellish’s effort was saved by the knee of Rogan Ravenhill and Josh Earl scored to make it 6-5 to send Barnsley through. Former Republic of Ireland Under-21 Luca Connell scored one of the penalties for the hosts.
Sammie Szmodics was on target but Derby still crashed out after a 2-1 home defeat to Championship new boys Lincoln.
Lincoln thoroughly deserved their victory in the sunshine at Pride Park and could have won by a bigger margin.
It took the Championship newcomers less than three minutes to go ahead when Ben House steered in a corner via a deflection off Matt Clarke.
Lincoln were playing with confidence and a superb pass from Freddie Draper released Dom Jefferies to fire into the bottom right corner in the 23rd minute.
Derby offered little until first-half stoppage time when Szmodics struck a brilliant volley from 25 yards into the top corner to halve the deficit - but they couldn't find a leveller.
Mason Melia made his debut for Lincoln after joining on a season-long loan from Tottenham Hotspur earlier this week, coming on in the 79th minute.
Mark Sykes scored an own goal for Millwall but redeemed himself after scoring a penalty in their shoot-out win after their game away to QPR.
Millwall goalkeeper Lukas Jensen saved all four QPR spot-kicks as the Lions won at Loftus Road.
The visitors prevailed 2-0 in the shootout after a late own goal by Sykes cancelled out Luke Cundle's second-half opener in a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes.
Jensen superbly kept out efforts from Ilias Chair, Harvey Vale and Koki Saito before his save from Kwame Poku sealed the victory.
Andy Moran missed a penalty for Preston in their shoot-out, but they still went through on penalties against Huddersfield after the sides had finished 1-1. Marcus Harness missed a spot-kick for Huddersfield.
Ciaran Brennan scored his penalty for Newport, but AFC Wimbledon still advanced on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
Conor Grant also successfully converted for Notts County after their 1-1 draw in Burnley, but the hosts went through on penalties.
Ryan Graydon missed his penalty for Salford as they suffered a shoot-out loss to Shrewsbury after a 1-1 draw.
