Schools Rankings - The Final Top 50 of 2026 SPOTLIGHT: What a year it has been. The 2026 U19 schoolboy rugby season delivered everything we have come to love about South African schoolboy rugby: spectacular victories, unexpected upsets, teams that emerged from nowhere to make their mark, and established giants forced to fight for every inch. Last week, we published our final Top 10. This week, after sitting down, recalculating the numbers and conducting a careful review of the season from 11th through to 50th, we present our final Rugby365 Top 50 Rankings for 2026. Will it be perfect? Probably not. No ranking ever can be. For the Top 50 or 60 teams to be ranked with absolute certainty, they would all have to play one another — something that is, quite simply, impossible. That is the nature of schoolboy rugby. Different provinces, different competitions, too many games, different draws and different challenges make direct comparisons incredibly difficult. Even the Top 10 will spark debate. But after analysing the season as objectively as possible, we believe this is the most accurate reflection of the year. And at the summit, we believe there can be little argument. Paarl Gim are our official Rugby365 No.1 schoolboy rugby team of 2026. The Podium The battle for the podium was considerably closer. Paarl Gim take the gold, while Paul Roos and Stellenberg complete the top three. There will undoubtedly be debate over who deserves second and third, but ultimately we felt Paul Roos edged Stellenberg. The Maroon Machine produced an outstanding season from start to finish. Stellenberg may have beaten Paul Roos head-to-head, but their 7-29 defeat to the seventh-ranked Paarl Boys was ultimately the deciding factor in our final assessment. Paul Roos therefore take the silver medal, with Stellenberg claiming bronze. Garsfontein had arguably done enough throughout the season to challenge for second place. However, their unexpected defeat to Waterkloof in the Virseker Noordvaal semifinal changed the picture. They even had one final opportunity to pull off a miracle, but a massive penalty attempt in the dying seconds fell short against the Klofies. Nevertheless, Garsfontein did enough to secure fourth place, finishing ahead of Affies — a side they defeated during the season. Affies, meanwhile, were punished by some disappointing results, most notably their loss to the 19th-ranked Michaelhouse, coupled with heavy defeats against both Paul Roos and Paarl Gim. A Difficult Year for Grey College For the boys from Bloemfontein, 2026 was a season they would rather forget. Grey College endured one of their poorest campaigns in years, suffering defeats to Affies, Australia’s Nudgee College, Stellenberg and Paul Roos, as well as a heavy defeat to Paarl Gim. For a programme accustomed to setting the benchmark, arguably the best rugby school on the planet, it was a difficult year — and one that undoubtedly contributed to their final position. The Wit Bulle and Boishaai The Wit Bulle from Krugersdorp may feel hard done by not to have finished seventh, above Paarl Boys. However, their defeat to the 32nd-ranked Diamantveld, combined with a heavy loss to Garsfontein, counted against them in our final assessment. They did finish the season strongly, but we felt Paarl Boys High faced stronger opposition than Monument and had done enough over the course of the campaign to claim seventh place. Waterkloof then completed a remarkable late-season surge into the Top 10 following their outstanding victory over Garsfontein, while Maritzburg College rounded out the Top 10. The Battle from 10 to 25 From 10th to 25th, the rankings become increasingly difficult to separate. There are strong arguments for several teams to move higher or lower, and this is where rankings become more art than science. Our biggest surprise package of the season, particularly during the closing stages, was undoubtedly HTS Drostdy. The Donkeys produced a superb campaign, recording impressive victories over Oakdale, Outeniqua and Wynberg. Their heavy defeats to Paul Roos and Monument ultimately prevented them from breaking into the Top 10, but their performances throughout the season deserve enormous credit. They were one of the stories of 2026. Rankings – An Informed Opinion At the end of the day, rankings such as these remain, by their very nature, an informed opinion — what many would call a “thumb suck”. But there is a method behind our madness. We have carefully considered strength of opposition, head-to-head results, quality victories, defeats, consistency throughout the season and performances against highly ranked opposition. We have not favoured any team. We have genuinely tried to produce the fairest and most accurate possible reflection of the 2026 U19 schoolboy rugby season in South Africa. Will everyone agree? Absolutely not. And that is exactly what makes schoolboy rugby so special. We hope these rankings have entertained you, sparked conversation and, most importantly, encouraged healthy debate. To the coaches, analysts, technical staff, medical teams and administrators who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure these rugby programmes operate at such an incredibly high level — your contribution does not go unnoticed. Maybe awards for the Best Forward, Best Backline Player and Best Overall Player? Perhaps even an award for the Most Improved Team of the Year?
