West Ham are through to the second round of the Carabao Cup after seeing off fellow Championship outfit Portsmouth in Stratford this afternoon. A brace from Taty Castellanos was the main difference between West Ham and Portsmouth, who took an early lead through Adrian Segecic before being pegged back by Nuno Espirito Santo's side. With a number of youngsters making a stake for a spot in the first team squad, this was always likely to resemble a pre-season fixture. West Ham, still clearly short of one or two players started slowly and it was Pompey who made the early running. The visitors took advantage of their early superiority by opening the scoring on 33 minutes. A corner, only half-cleared fell to Segecic who saw his deflected 20-yard strike evade the clutches of Mads Hermansen to give his side the lead. Fortunately for the Hammers it was a lead which was to last for just 10 minutes, as Castellanos was on hand to convert Mo Kante's centre to level the scores from eight yards out with a well-taken shot as the ball came across him from the left. It was to get worse for Portsmouth before the interval arrived as skipper Jarrod Bowen - who many believed would have left the club by now - made it 2-1 to the Hammers on the stroke of half-time, firing home from the edge of the box via a slight deflection. Following the restart, it took West Ham just five minutes to add a third goal. Once again it was Bowen and Castellanos involved, with the former providing an inch-perfect delivery for the latter to convert with a precise header. Although that was it as far as the goals were concerned, it was encouraging to see West Ham grow into the game as it progressed. 90 minutes for the likes of Ollie Scarles, the energetic Lewis Orford and Kante, completed by a brief cameo from Josh Ajala will have done the Academy graduates no harm at all. Additionally there was a brief glimpse of new signing Joel Veltman, who did enough in his few moments on the field to suggest he is likely to enjoy a productive relationship with Jarrod Bowen on the right side. Next up for West Ham is next weekend's trip to Burnley for the opening game of the Championship campaign. The Clarets were also in Carabao Cup action today, beating League Two Notts County 4-3 on penalties after the game ended 1-1.
