Delano Burgzorg scored the winning penalty in the shoot-out after Jusef Erabi equalised in stoppage time for 10-man Preston to knock Huddersfield out of the Carabao Cup.
Daniel Iversen saved two penalties, after a thrilling end to normal time that ended 1-1 after Erabi cancelled out Radinio Balker’s strike, as Preston played 69 minutes without Lewis Gibson, who received a red card.
It was a cagey, even opening 20 minutes at Goodison Park, the former Everton men’s ground hosting due to Preston’s Deepdale pitch not being ready, which quickly changed after the Lancashire club went down to 10 men.
Ashley Fletcher was a constant handful for Preston to deal with, and as he spun away from Gibson, the Preston captain pulled him back as he was through on goal.
The Huddersfield striker almost piled more misery onto Paul Heckingbottom’s team from the resulting free-kick, guiding a header onto a post.
Set-pieces continued to prove dangerous for the Terriers as, with seven minutes left in the half, Balker nestled a header past Iversen.
Preston massively struggled with the man disadvantage in the first half, but after the break they applied more pressure on the Huddersfield back line, and in the third minute of added time Erabi drilled the home side level.
Burgzorg ended the shoot-out with a clinical penalty after Huddersfield missed two and Andrew Moran had his spot-kick saved by Matty Young.
