Timberwolves acquire former lottery pick Cody Williams in trade with Utah The Timberwolves added a veteran role player and a young developmental piece to their roster Saturday, acquiring forwards John Konchar and Cody Williams from the Utah Jazz in exchange for Josh Green and cash considerations. Williams, 21, is a former first-round pick still viewed as one of the league’s intriguing young forwards. He was the 10th pick in the 2024 Draft. A source tells KSTP that the Wolves will waive and stretch Konchar’s contract. The Wolves made this move to free up the necessary salary cap space to pay new starting power forward Jonathan Kuminga $6M/year. Williams arrives in Minnesota as the centerpiece of the deal. The 6-foot-8 forward has played 117 games in two seasons with Utah and showed significant growth during the 2025-26 campaign. He appeared in a career-high 67 games, starting 41, and averaged a career-best 8.8 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists while shooting 46.8% from the field. His breakout performance came March 15 against Sacramento, when he exploded for a career-high 34 points while adding seven rebounds and seven assists. Before entering the NBA, Williams spent one season at Colorado, where he averaged 11.9 points per game and earned Pac-12 All-Freshman Team honors in 2024. The trade comes just weeks after Minnesota acquired Green from Charlotte on July 10. Green, 25, appeared in 58 games for the Hornets last season, averaging 4.3 points and 1.8 rebounds in 15.7 minutes per game. Over six NBA seasons with Dallas and Charlotte, Green has played in 349 games and averaged 6.3 points while shooting 48.0% from the field and 38.7% from 3-point range.
