After being fired by the Atlanta Falcons in February, former Michigan football staffer LaTroy Lewis is back in the news this week as the University of Michigan reached a settlement with the woman who accused Lewis of assault. A settlement agreement first obtained by the Detroit Free Press shows that the University agreed to pay the woman $848,000 and her attorney, Karen Truszkowski, $352,000. In doing so, the woman and her lawyer released any further legal allegations they may have against the University and its current or former employees. The Ann Arbor Police Department also closed its own investigation against Lewis on Friday. Ultimately no charges were brought against Lewis in Ann Arbor and while the department confirmed its closing of the investigation, it did not release the police report. Truszkowski claimed there is no correlation between the closing of the investigation and settlement with the University in a statement provided Aug 28. “Just because the Ann Arbor police closed the case involving Mr. Lewis does not mean that there was any finding any way or the other,” Truskowski said Friday. “It was closed because my client was not inclined to pursue it at the time.” Lewis denied any allegations against, a stance which he has maintained for the last seven months. In the settlement, all sides also agreed to confidentiality and non-disparagement provisions. First joining the Wolverines football team in 2022 as a graduate assistant under then-coach Jim Harbaugh and remaining on the staff in varying capacities until 2025, Lewis was a part of the 2023 CFP National Championship-winning team and was retained in 2024 by then-coach Sherrone Moore and promoted to assistant defensive line coach. After brief stints at Toledo and Connecticut, Lewis was hired by the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons announced Lewis’ removal just two weeks after his hiring in a 14-word statement on their website. The organization noted that they were investigating claims made by the woman. This woman obtained a personal protection order against Lewis in Washtenaw County in late February filing where she stated she was raped, assaulted and threatened. The alleged December 2024 incident occurred while Lewis was still employed on Moore’s staff.
