The Canal Court and Spa Down senior championship Portaferry 0-12 Liatroim Fontenoys 1-10 Ballygalget 0-15 Ballycran 2-11 Clonduff beat Ballyholland AN injury time point from Aoife McCrickard won the game of the weekend for Liatroim Fontenoys in the Canal Court and Spa Down camogie championship. The victory came at a price with top-scorer Aimee McAleenan red carded in the 53rd minute of a real tough game in Portaferry. That incident could have been costly for the visitors with Ciara Doran pointing a free and then Caileigh McConnell grabbing the equaliser with time running out. But Liatroim fought back and McCrickard clinched the group points with her late salvo. McAleenan had dominated the first quarter with all four Liatroim points scored from dead balls while McConnell and Doran with two each edged Portaferry ahead. McCrickard and McAleenan regained the lead for Liatroim before Kate McAleenan smashed home the only goal of the game in the 25th minute. Doran though finished the first half with a point for Portaferry and then she and Mia Fitzsimons closed the gap to the minimum on the re-start. However McAleenan pointed three more frees before picking up the red card. Her defence though held together with veteran Karen McMullan and Aisling Brown standing firm until a period of 20 scoreless minutes ended with McCrickard hitting the winner. For the second week running, Clonduff brushed aside their opponents in Hilltown to go top of the qualification group on score-difference. All but a single point of their total came from open play. There were two goals each for Ceallagh Byrne, Sara Louise Graffin, Katie McGilligan and Ellen Sheilds, the latter ending up top scorer for the Shamrocks on 2-7. Karen Maginn and Colleen Murtagh registered two points each for Ballyholland. The other game, a derby on the Ards, was won by Ballycran on a 2-11 to 0-15 scoreline after Ballygalget had led by 0-10 to 1-6 at the break. Tara Monan and Deirbhile Savage were in good shooting form for the home side while Sophie McGrath hit the first goal for Ballycran and went on to top-score with 1-7 that included six points from frees. Molly Lennon’s goal, scored after the break, edged Ballycran into the lead and McGrath’s free-taking ensured they stayed there until the final whistle. There is now a mid-group break and when the competition resumes on September 12th the big game should be in Fontenoy Park between unbeaten teams Liatroim and Clonduff.
