Burnley (p) 1-1 Notts County: New season begins with unconvincing cup win Burnley begin season with nervy penalty shootout cup win Burnley edged their way into the second round of the Carabao Cup with a penalty shootout victory against Notts County. The Clarets produced an unconvincing display in their first game of the season, having to come from behind to draw 1-1 in normal time against their League One opposition. Zian Flemming was the man to get Burnley back on level terms shortly after half time after Callum Roberts had given the Magpies a surprise first-half lead. The first 45 minutes represented a poor start to Nicky Hayen’s reign, with the hosts looking toothless and tepid, producing just one shot on target. But they improved in the second period, levelling through Flemming’s coolly taken lob. While they were unable to get the job in normal time, Max Weiss was their hero in the shootout, making two impressive saves, while Kyle Walker scored the winning spot kick. While there will be inevitable relief at a first win of any kind since February, there will be concern and frustration they weren’t able to beat third tier opposition in normal time. Hayen named a strong side, as he aimed to kick off his Burnley reign with a victory in his first competitive game in charge. Oliver Sonne came in for Lucas Pires, who dropped to the bench, but the Peruvian started at right-back while Bashir Humphreys shifted over to left-back. That meant Kyle Walker partnered Joe Worrall in the centre of defence, with former Nottingham Forest man Worrall preferred to Hjalmar Ekdal. Ugo Raghouber was handed his competitive Burnley debut following his summer move from Lille, while fellow new signings Ben Amos and Lluc Castell were named on the bench. Connor Roberts also returned to the bench after missing Burnley’s last two friendlies with a knock, while Zeki Amdouni was named among the substitutes despite only returning this last week following his involvement at the World Cup. Shurandy Sambo, Ashley Barnes, Armando Broja, Lyle Foster and Michael Obafemi weren’t involved, while Jordan Beyer, Josh Cullen and Jaydon Banel all missed out through injury. The Clarets made their intentions clear right from the off, winning a corner inside 11 seconds as Zian Flemming’s audacious volley was deflected behind. But Hannibal’s inswinging delivery was cleared by the County defence. Nevertheless, the home side remained in possession, which proved to be the pattern for the remainder of proceedings, with the visitors happy to concede the ball. Burnley continued to work the ball well into the final third with some incisive, fast-paced play, but too often their final ball let them down as they looked to open up the Magpies. Notts County hit back with their first spell of pressure of the game as they forced a corner and a long throw, but the Clarets managed to come away unscathed. The hosts, while still on top, still looked a little unconvincing, often falling back into their old habits of slowing down play and passing sidewards and backwards far too often. With 32 minutes on the clock, Burnley finally produced a shot on target as Jacob Bruun Larsen looked to volley across the goalkeeper and into the far corner after latching onto a long ball forward, but James Belshaw did well to push it away. A moment that summed up Burnley’s first half came 10 minutes before the interval when they worked the ball well from back to front, only for Aaron Ramsey to hold onto the ball for too long when Bashir Humphreys was in acres of space to the left of him, causing the move to break down. The more Burnley failed to convince, the more Notts County began to grow in confidence. Lo and behold, three minutes before the first half was up, they took a surprise lead. Callum Roberts was the man to get it, scoring in fine fashion as he turned on the edge of the Burnley box before rifling a low shot into the bottom corner, giving Max Weiss no chance. But from a Burnley perspective, it was a seriously poor goal to concede to compound a poor first half. Click here Things almost went from bad to worse for Burnley at the start of the second half, as James Gibbons somehow managed to stretch out his leg to reach a deep free kick, but Weiss just about managed to cling onto his ball back into the six-yard box. It proved to be a big turning point in the match, as the Clarets got themselves back level just seconds later. Zian Flemming was the man to get it, lifting the ball coolly over the onrushing goalkeeper after racing onto a ball in behind County’s backline. You could sense the sigh of relief from Turf Moor, with the goal allowing the Clarets to play with a bit more freedom - Oliver Sonne side footing wastefully over from Bruun Larsen’s pullback as the hosts sensed a quick second. Edwards, the creator for Flemming’s equaliser, then came close with a free kick from a tough angle, but Belshaw did well to tip his effort wide. Flemming then almost doubled his tally, firing agonisingly wide of the far post after Burnley had played a quick free kick into the striker. Midway through the half, Hayen turned to his bench for the first time by making a triple change, introducing Connor Roberts, Josh Laurent and Zeki Amdouni. The Clarets were given something of a let off shortly afterwards as County sub Conor Grant whistled a dangerous low shot just past the post, as the visitors threatened for the first time in the second half. But the pressure was otherwise coming one way as Burnley looked to finish the game in normal time, with Edwards firing wastefully over after controlling Bruun Larsen’s pullback just inside the County box. With 10 minutes remaining, County came inches away from retaking the lead as Maz Kouhyar beat Weiss with a low drive, only for it to whistle the wrong side of the Burnley post. With penalties looming, the home side weren’t exactly hammering on the door during the final stages. If anything, the League One Magpies looked relatively comfortable and the more likely to score the game’s third goal. Three minutes into six added on, Flemming headed over at full stretch as he met Josh Laurent’s centre. That proved to be the last chance of the game though, leaving the game to be decided by spot kicks. Weiss was Burnley’s hero with two excellent stops, while Kyle Walker was the man to convert the winning penalty as the Clarets won 4-3 on spot kicks to seal their progression.
