Shedeur Sanders is one of the most promising quarterbacks in the NFL. He is now confirmed to be the primary backup quarterback for the Cleveland Browns in the next season, with Deshaun Watson the starting quarterback. Some are disagreeing with the decision.
He has played in two of the preseason games, and started in one of them. Sanders was recently mocked by a Cleveland-based media outlet, and one former franchise player came to his defense.
TJ Ward defends Shedeur Sanders after Cleveland Voice mocked him
Sanders started in the Browns’ preseason matchup against the Bills, and completed 9 of 11 passes for 74 yards with one touchdown and one interception. In a sideline interview, he admitted that he forgot to participate in the pregame coin toss despite being named a game captain. Many felt that the interview was done in a lighthearted manner.
Longtime Cleveland sports media personality Bruce Drennan mocked the quarterback. He said, “Did you pay attention diligently to the in-game interview of Sanders in the last preseason game? I mean, I thought he came across as an adolescent goof. I am sorry, he was terrible in my opinion.”
Former Browns Pro Bowl safety T.J. Ward responded to Drennan’s comments on the Speakeasy podcast. He replied with: “That sounds like a hater if I ever heard one. Adolescent goof. First off, he (Sanders) is a young man, so he kind of is adolescent, especially in the NFL, and you got guys like this dude behind the mic that just hate to see young, rich black men have fun.”
He added, “They hate to see us happy. And that’s what it is. This dude, I don’t even know his name. I don’t know if he’s Cleveland Media, but he just seems like a grumpy old man mad at life, mad that he couldn’t do the things in life that some of these young men are doing at a very young age, is making a very large lump sum of money. That’s what that comes off as.” One analyst recently talked about Sanders’ future with the Browns.
Browns analyst hints at possible Shedeur Sanders departure
Watson has been named as the starting quarterback, and Sanders will be his backup who could potentially start some games. Browns analyst Spencer German hinted that Sanders could be traded, though he did not say it as a fact. He said, “I’m not anticipating that Shedeur Sanders is gonna get traded, but it’s the NFL. Crazier things have happened.”
He added, “You just never know what obviously could happen. If somebody called up and was offering the right price, if somebody called up legitimately and offered a 4th-round pick or even a 5th-round pick, if you even got the value back that you drafted Shedeur Sanders with, I think Andrew Berry would say ‘yes’ in a heartbeat.”
He added that an offer from another franchise could change things, “If they think he’s their guy, A: he’d be starting right now, and, B: their asking price would be ‘Okay, you’ve got to give us a first-, second-, or third-round pick.” Shedeur Sanders will now watch from the sideline as Watson starts the regular-season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
