The New England Patriots’ running back competition took another turn on the eve of roster cutdown day. Patriots add running back via trade with Cardinals The Patriots have made a trade ahead of the roster cutdown deadline. Corey Kiner, who most recently played for the Cardinals, has joined New England via trade. According to a report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Patriots are sending a 2028 seventh-round draft pick to Arizona in return. Kiner, 24, amassed 556 carries for 2,882 yards and 16 touchdowns during his four-year college career at LSU and Cincinnati. Despite his productivity, he did not hear his name called in the 2025 NFL Draft, and started out as a free agent signing with the San Francisco 49ers. He later spent time on the practice squads in both Minnesota and Arizona, appearing in four games for the Cardinals during his rookie regular season. The 5-foot-9, 209-pound runner has a combined 12 carries for 58 yards on his NFL résumé. He also two passes for 15 yards and has run one kickoff back 22 yards. Now a Patriot, Kiner slots in the third running back spot behind Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson. The team had looked for a viable RB3 throughout the summer, with Lan Larison, Jam Miller, Hassan Haskins and JaMycal Hasty the options currently on the roster. The trade for Kiner comes in the middle of New England having started the process of trimming its roster. The first wave of cuts has already brought the team from previously 91 players into the 70s.
