Manchester United must be itching to register their first points of the new Premier League season on Sunday evening when they lock horns with newly-promoted Ipswich Town at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils were shocked 2-0 by newbies Hull City in their first game of the 2026/27 campaign. Despite enjoying over 70% possession, they could not breach a resilient Hull City side. The Tigers punished Michael Carrick’s side twice from set-pieces and completed a sensational upset.
Carrick will want to see a much-improved performance in Manchester United’s first home game of the season. They are set to be up against an Ipswich Town side who are high on confidence after finding themselves at the winning end of a 2-1 scoreline against Sunderland on the opening weekend.
Manchester United Team News
Amad Diallo will miss the visit of Ipswich Town after he sat out the defeat to Hull City on Saturday with a niggle. Mason Mount has resumed full training after a foot injury and will be back in the squad, Carrick confirmed in his press conference.
New signing Carlos Baleba joined the club from Brighton & Hove Albion earlier this week. However, the defensive midfielder will be out for a couple of weeks with an ankle issue. Matthijs de Ligt is on the comeback trail after back surgery in May.
Predicted Manchester United lineup vs Ipswich Town (4-2-3-1)
Goalkeeper
Senne Lammens made some strong saves against Hull but was eventually beaten twice. The big Belgian will be raring to keep a clean sheet in Man United’s first home game of the season.
Defence
Changes are expected to happen in defence from the Hull game. Lisandro Martinez and Diogo Dalot could walk into the Manchester United lineup, replacing Ayden Heaven and Noussair Mazraoui, respectively.
Martinez will slot in straight alongside Harry Maguire in central defence, with Dalot stationed at right-back position in the Manchester United lineup. Despite a poor game at the MKM Stadium, Luke Shaw will be retained at left-back.
Carrick will hope for a much-improved performance from his defenders on Sunday.
Midfield
Man United’s midfield got exposed in transitions many times last weekend, leaving Carrick with a dilemma heading into the Ipswich game. He could start Kobbie Mainoo to have more control of the ball, with the England international possibly pairing up with Youri Tielemans in the engine room in the Manchester United lineup.
Bruno Fernandes was underwhelming against Hull, failing to get into pockets of space and create opportunities in the final third. The Portuguese playmaker will be keen to produce an impactful display vs. Ipswich at home.
Mason Mount’s return is a boost for the hosts, and the Englishman could get minutes off the bench.
Attack
Marcus Rashford could get the nod over Patrick Dorgu on the left flank in the Manchester United lineup.
With Amad out, Bryan Mbeumo is set to continue on the right wing. Rashford and Mbeumo’s attacking intent and willingness to make runs in behind could cause problems for the Tractor Boys.
Matheus Cunha should operate as a No.9 again, hoping to link up play and find spaces behind the visitors’ defence. Benjamin Sesko could get minutes off the bench as he did last time out.
