On the first day of the Cougar Invitational, WSU drew the University of Omaha and took care of them soundly, winning 3-0 at Bohler Gym. The Cougs kept Omaha at arms length in each set, winning by four points in the first, five in the second and three in the third. The name that jumped off the stat-sheet was sophomore Eliana Ti’a. The outside hitter racked up a team-leading seven kills in the evening and also snatched five digs. While Ti’a had a night to remember, two other Cougs had their welcome to Pullman moments. Portland State transfer Naomi White and true freshman Whitney Dewicki both put on a show in their Cougar debuts, and were crucial to the Cougs’ sweep. White tied Ti’a for the most kills on the evening with seven, and led the team for hitting percentage at an impressive .636. While she did not contribute a ton on defense, her offensive efficiency made the Cougs scary all night. Dewicki was equally impressive. The true freshman in her collegiate debut was all over the court. On top of grabbing five kills, the youngster also blocked two attacks while digging up one ball. Those numbers do not exactly blow you away, but it was still an exciting showing in her first game as a Cougar. The opening day win gives WSU a 1-0 record to start their season. They stay at home Saturday and Sunday to cap off the Cougar Invitational at Bohler Gym. They play the University of Montana on Saturday at 5 p.m and Central Michigan University on Sunday at 11 a.m.
