Cleveland Browns News and Rumors 8/29/26: Forty-Four Names This story from TheOBR.com was published as part of a partnership. CLEVELAND, Ohio (TheOBR.com) - Good morning, Cleveland Browns fans! THE DAILY BLOVIATION Sunday is when dreams die. Or, perhaps, just take a temporary setback. At 6PM on that day, the Browns need to whittle their roster down to 53 players. They’ll earmark a number that will be cut on Sunday, and then the team will hope to sneak them onto a practice squad. Yesterday and today, journalists have been focused on predicting what the team will do. We’ve got five brave souls who have attempted to anticipate what will happen on the 53-man roster. I am not one of them. For the same reason I don’t dance in public. Fat guys + dancing = humor. Similarly, webdorks and 53-man projections mean a Sunday evening reckoning I don’t want to face. I prefer making predictions well ahead of time so they’re forgotten by the time they can be disproven. So, I’ll pick on the people who have the bravery to do it. In this case, we have beat writers in Scott Petrak, Zac Jackson, Mary Kay Cabot, Fred “The Legend” Greetham, and Pete Smith all putting out there who they think will make the cut. Because I’m lazy, and because my dog woke me up at 4AM, which is the time I’m writing this, I utilized AI to read all the predictions and line up the differences for me. Oddly, gremlins and other AI hallucinations don’t appear to have entered the list, for which my addled brain is grateful. WHERE THE PREDICTIONS AGREE First, let’s look at the names that were on every list. That’s 44 of the 53 players. QUARTERBACK: Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders, and Taylen Green. RUNNING BACK: Quinshon Judkins, Dylan Sampson, and Raheim Sanders.WIDE RECEIVER: Jerry Jeudy, KC Concepcion, Denzel Boston, Isaiah Bond, and Tylan Wallace.TIGHT END: Harold Fannin Jr. and Blake Whiteheart. Carsen Ryan is on all five as well, except The Athletic lists him at fullback. OFFENSIVE LINE: Spencer Fano, Zion Johnson, Elgton Jenkins, Teven Jenkins, Tytus Howard, Austin Barber, Dawand Jones. DEFENSIVE LINE: Jared Verse, Isaiah McGuire, Maliek Collins, Mason Graham, Mike Hall Jr., Kalia Davis, Adin Huntington, Derek Barnett. LINEBACKER: Carson Schwesinger, Quincy Williams, Easton Mascarenas-Arnold, Justin Jefferson. CORNERS: Denzel Ward, Tyson Campbell, Myles Harden, Mekhi Blackmon. SAFETIES: Grant Delpit, Ronnie Hickman, Emmanuel McNeil-Warren, Donovan McMillon. SPECIAL TEAMS: Andre Szmyt, Corey Bojorquez, Rex Sunahara. Forty-four names, five lists, all locks. That gives us nine sports where there is some debate. WHERE THE PREDICTIONS DIFFER That Quarterback from Oregon: Dillon Gabriel played himself back in the conversation Thursday night, putting a near-perfect performance (12/15 and a QB rating within decimal points of perfect). That’s good enough for everyone but Pete, who intend to hold on to Gabriel to see if the phone rings for one of the quarterbacks early this week. Pete is the one who makes the hard call here, cutting Gabriel outright. Green has the traits that “unquestionably translate.” Gabriel is smart and he works. “It just may not be this quarterback room.” He thinks Green might be the only one of the four still here in 2027. The Sixth Receiver: This is a street fight. Petrak gives it to Luke Floriea on three preseason touchdowns. Cabot and Pete give it to Malachi Corley (Cabot: kickoff returner plus backup; Pete: bigger, plays special teams, a role). Fred and The Athletic stop at five and send both Floriea and Corley to the practice squad. Mary Kay declares Floriea the odd man out, ex-Mentor Cardinal or not. Pete’s focuses on some of the pragmatic outliers on the wide receiver: 5-foot-8, no special teams, no path. I wrote yesterday that Floriea made the decision hard. Hard is not the same as in. The limitations that Pete lists make it possible (not assured) that he could make it through waivers to the Practice Squad. The Crucible of the Offensive Line: Luke Wypler and Zak Zinter are on four lists. The Athletic cuts both and keeps KT Leveston and Parker Brailsford instead. Pete and Fred keep Leveston too (three of five). Brailsford is the wrist. Cabot and The Athletic put him on the 53. Pete and Fred put him on short-term IR so they can keep another body who can actually play something other than center. Petrak had him as an IR candidate two days ago. If you are keeping score at home, the five of them cannot agree whether the 10th lineman is Wypler, Zinter, Leveston, or a kid in a brace. Zinter played his way onto the list this year, adapting well to Monken/Warhop’s scheme. One More Edge Guy: Julian Okwara is on Cabot, Petrak, and Fred. The Athletic swaps him for Khordae Sydnor (first kickoff teams Thursday). Pete keeps Logan Fano and leaves a blank for “a player not currently on the roster,” because he thinks Berry is going shopping. Fred says the same thing without the blank: waiver wire or a trade, after Epenesa failed the physical. The Final Linebacker: Winston Reid is on four lists, which makes the webdork happy, because he’s a fan. Pete is the one who hates cutting him and does it anyway, hoping the practice squad holds. Nathaniel (Bookie) Watson is the other way in: Pete and The Athletic keep him (SAM, special teams). Cabot and Fred have him as the odd man out. The Coats Hang-Up: Michael Coats Jr. makes Cabot’s 53 on a bad ankle. Everybody else either IR’s him or looks outside. D’Angelo Ross is on Petrak and Fred. Daniel Thomas is on Cabot and Fred. Pete and The Athletic both save a corner seat for someone who does not work here yet. Pete also still has Chris Edmonds on the 53, and The Athletic still has Tre Avery. Friday waived both. So those two seats are already gone. It’s chaos, I tell you. Sheer chaos. The Fullback/Tight End Battle: Michael Burton is a Petrak-only keep. Everybody else either uses Ryan as the H-back or parks Burton on the practice squad. Joe Royer is NFI on Cabot and Fred. Nobody is playing him Sunday. The building is not arguing about Ward or Judkins or Fano. It is arguing about whether last night bought Gabriel a chair, whether Floriea is a story or a roster spot, and whether Berry would rather keep a fourth quarterback or go buy a tight end and a corner on Monday. Monken already told you they cannot keep everybody. The lists agree. They just disagree about who “everybody” is. Have a good one. GO BROWNS!
