The Buffalo Bills are making a change to their special teams before opening the 2026 NFL regular season. The punting position had been one of the most closely-watched roster battles throughout training camp, with Buffalo weighing the experience of an established veteran against the potential of a seventh-round rookie. The Bills used a draft pick on Tommy Doman Jr. despite having Mitch Wishnowsky under contract. Wishnowsky, 34, joined Buffalo in 2025 after six seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. He appeared in 13 games for the Bills last season and averaged 45.3 yards on 38 punts, with a long of 62 yards and 18 punts landing inside the 20-yard line. Buffalo re-signed him to a one-year deal in March. Buffalo informed the veteran punter that it plans to release him, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, with rookie seventh-round pick Tommy Doman Jr. now in line to take over the job. The decision comes after Doman impressed throughout the preseason. Doman averaged 48.1 yards on seven preseason punts, with four landing inside the 20 and a long of 59 yards. Against Pittsburgh in the finale, he punted four times for 208 yards, including a 49-yarder that pinned the Steelers at their own 10-yard line. The 22-year-old Florida product also handled Buffalo’s kickoff duties throughout the finale, further strengthening his case to become the team’s primary specialist. He previously averaged 44.3 yards per punt at Michigan in 2023 before transferring to Florida. The Bills finished the preseason 3-0 and will now turn their attention to the regular season.
