Andoni Iraola in good company as wait for first win as Liverpool boss goes on

Andoni Iraola may still be awaiting his first win as Liverpool boss, but slow starts by newly-appointed managers are certainly not unusual at Anfield during the Premier League era. In fact, their greatest manager of this period, Jurgen Klopp, had to wait until his third league game in charge to secure his first victory after opening with two draws during the 2015-16 campaign. Roy Hodgson and Kenny Dalglish, when he returned for a second spell at the helm, also did not taste victory until the third time of asking. It was worse for Roy Evans, who did not win until his fourth game, while Brendan Rodgers failed to win any of his first five games, winning for the first time only at the sixth attempt. Gerard Houllier, after he took sole charge following the departure of Evans, and Rafael Benitez fared better with wins in their second games. Iraola’s immediate predecessor Arne Slot is the only full-time Liverpool manager to win their first game in charge as the Dutchman kicked off the 2024-25 title-winning campaign with three successive triumphs.
