However, for now, the news is not whether the pair can claim the world championship once again – it’s that their star driver has penned a new deal to secure his long-term future with the team. However, Norris and McLaren are believed to have been in talks over an extension since the end of June and it is unlikely he was ever a candidate to be replaced, particularly in the wake of Zak Brown’s strongest show of faith yet with the extension. How much could new Norris contract be worth? Breakdown of reported McLaren deal Although financial details have not been disclosed, Press Association in the United Kingdom report that the new contract is worth £120,000,000 over the following four years. That breaks down at £30m per year and would make the defending world champion the third-highest paid driver on the grid behind multi-world champions Verstappen and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton. If the report sum is accurate, it would mean he would earn the equivalent of around £2.5m per month, £576,923 per week and £82,192 per day. It works out at £3,425 per hour, £57 per minute or 95p every second. “Lando has been an integral part of McLaren’s journey and success over the last nine years,” McLaren team principal, Andrea Stella said. “And we are delighted to continue our partnership with him through to at least 2030. “He is an exceptional driver, someone who combines outstanding natural speed with maturity, consistency and a strong commitment to McLaren, but above all, he is a special human being who is valued by everyone in the team. “Since joining McLaren as part of our junior programme, he has grown with us and played a central role in bringing the team back to the front of F1. This extension gives us important continuity and reinforces our confidence in the direction we are taking together.” Verstappen, the most expensive driver in the sport, signed a deal believed to be worth £200 million in total, which would equate to roughly £40 million per season and significantly higher than Norris. Breaking it down, Verstappen’s deal works out at £1.88m per week, £268,704 per day, £11,196 per hour, £186.6 per minute and £3.11 per second. Hamilton is believed to make a similar sum of around £40m per year.
