Cory's Corner: How Franklin Became The Defensive Boss Look deeper than the stats. The Packers need someone that is going to push them to be better than they thought they could be. I loved the trade when it happened on March 11. A lot of people were probably furrowing their eyebrows as to why the Packers would want a Colts linebacker. But Zaire Franklin wasn’t just a linebacker — he was a proven leader. That was something the Packers were desperate for, because the 2025 Packers defense had an average age of 25.3 years old. "He's an alpha, plain and simple," Packers first-year defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon said when discussing Franklin’s immediate ascension. "With a new system, you can lose precious seconds waiting for guys to align. Zaire eliminates that. He sees the offense developing before they even snap the ball. Having a guy out there who can dynamically solve problems with the rest of the group in real-time is like having a second coach on the field". In a highly unusual offseason move, the Packers aggressively traded with the Indianapolis Colts to land Franklin, a 2024 All-Pro. They immediately handed him the coveted green-dot communication headset, bypassing established roster veterans to make a newcomer the vocal heart of the franchise. Gannon wasn't looking for a passive recipient of instructions; he was looking for an on-field general. Franklin's leadership style is rooted in an obsessive mental preparation that sets a standard for the entire locker room. He isn't just an elite tackler; he is a hyper-communicator who commands respect through his sheer understanding of spatial geometry and opposing schemes. He holds teammates accountable, barks out late adjustments, and brings a fierce physical edge that has quickly redefined the temperament of Green Bay's front seven. "I love the edge he brings, he brings a real toughness," noted head coach Matt LaFleur following a joint training camp practice vs. the Cardinals. "If you know what's coming, that allows you to anticipate a little bit better, and that's how you ultimately make plays. Zaire does a great job communicating and just plays the game the right way". That intellectual dominance will be tested immediately. The Packers' defense faces a daunting adversity to start the 2026 campaign, with star pass rusher Micah Parsons sidelined for the opening portion of the season on the Physically Unable to Play list. Parsons' unique ability to single-handedly dismantle offensive lines cannot be replicated by a single backup. Instead, the Packers must mask their sudden lack of raw edge-rushing depth through schematic deception and flawless execution. This is where Franklin’s reinvention as an on-field boss becomes paramount. To survive the loss of an elite weapon like Parsons, Green Bay cannot rely on raw physical mismatches. They must out-think their opponents. Franklin’s ability to disguise coverages, time interior blitzes, and manipulate blocking assignments will dictate whether the Packers can tread water in a ruthless NFC North. Gannon has drawn up the blueprint, but it is Franklin who must lay the foundation. I know there are plenty of people that are skeptical about handing the defensive keys to a fresh face. But think of it this way, everyone on that defense is a fresh face. They all are trying to understand Gannon’s defense together. It’s not that Franklin has averaged 1.25 sacks in eight seasons, nor is it that Franklin’s tackling took a nosedive in 2025 after arguably having his best statistical season of his career in 2024. The Packers need someone on the field that isn’t going to be content with being OK. That’s not an easy job. And it’s not a fun job. People complain about leaders because those are the guys that are trying to squeeze every morsel of effort and talent out of what they have. Franklin has been to the playoffs twice and has only seen one postseason win. The Colts also finished under .500 four times. The Packers needed an edge. Be relieved that he wears the green dot.
