Chelsea 3-0 AC Milan: Joao Pedro scores brace as Rossoneri fail to register a shot on target

The final friendly of AC Milan’s eastern tour did not exactly go to plan as they were beaten 3-0 by Chelsea in Jakarta. Milan and Chelsea traded chances for the opening 45 minutes, but then Joao Pedro headed in a corner just before the break to open the scoring. The Blues would net twice in quick succession after the interval through Joao Pedro again and Moises Caicedo. Read SempreMilan ad-free and get access to exclusive news. Click here for a free trial! Ruben Amorim once again made quite a few changes compared to the last friendly, with the main headlines being Filippo Terracciano getting a start at right centre-back alongside Koni De Winter, while Christian Comotto partnered with Luka Modric in midfield. Despite being a preseason friendly, the game began at a frantic pace in front of a huge crowd that seemed heavily in favour of Milan. Francesco Camarda and Rafael Leao had a couple of darts into space that were well cut out, while at the other end Leao did well defensively to deny Joao Pedro. In the 12th minute Milan were nearly undone by a route-one approach from Chelsea. Sanchez’s long ball over the top found the run of Joao Pedro, with Koni De Winter getting mixed up and Lorenzo Torriani not coming off his line quick enough. The striker got a shot off from close quarters, but it was well saved. Chelsea were on top in the opening 20 minutes but Milan had their moments. A nice high recovery saw Leao with space to surge into. His effort from just inside the box was well blocked, then Samuel Chukwueze floated in a cross that Camarda tried to bicycle kick, before Luka Modric volleyed wide. Acheampong had to get a sliding tackle on Leao right as he darted for the byline midway through the half, and he did. Brilliantly timed. From the resulting corner, Comotto had a volley blocked behind by Caicedo after the ball sat up nicely 18 yards out. The teams kept trading chances. A smart low save down to his right from Torriani denied a Pedro Neto shot that was curling inside the far post, and at the other end Strahinja Pavlovic collected a lay-off from Camarda and strode into the box, but lashed his attempt well over. The turning point in the game came in the second minute of three added at the end of the first half as Chelsea took the lead. Amorim cannot have been pleased with the manner of the goal, as Joao Pedro emerged unmarked a few yards out to head in a corner. It was perhaps not a surprise given the nature of preseason, but there were eight substitutions at the interval. On came Diawara, Gabbia, Saelemaekers, Jashari, Musah, Bartesaghi, Nkunku and Ramos. Only Torriani, Terracciano and Loftus-Cheek remained from the first half. Joao Pedro doubled the lead for the Blues just one minute after the restart. A sweeping move saw a cross from Pedro Neto during which Terracciano did not notice the Brazilian’s run in from behind, and he flicked it in with his left foot. Four minutes later and it was 3-0. Another set-piece caused issues, with a corner from the left swung outwards to Moises Caicedo, who volleyed in brilliantly from 20 yards out. It wasn’t a rock but Torriani – who had been questionable for the second goal – appeared to see it late through the crowd. Marco Palestra was a constant nuisance with his darting runs and he had an opportunity to make it four, though he fired wide at the near post after chesting down a cross well. Two minutes later it probably should have been 3-1: Yunus Musah got away down the right and pulled it back to the penalty spot, yet Ramos and Nkunku seemed to get in the way of each other, ending the danger without a shot. Chelsea were twice not far away from making it 4-0. Firstly Quenda rattled the outside of the upright with a shot that left Torriani rooted, then the goalkeeper was called upon to make another save to deny Estevao from a narrow angle, who had got the better of Diawara.
