According to the Daily Record, the Black Cats have registered an interest in the 24-year-old Scotland international, although they face competition from French giants Marseille and Greek side Olympiakos. Doig has spent the last four years in Italian football after leaving Hibernian for Hellas Verona in 2022. He spent two seasons with Verona before completing a £5million move to Sassuolo in January 2024. Marseille were also interested in signing the defender at that stage and have now reportedly returned to the picture as they consider another attempt to bring him to France. Doig made 30 appearances in Serie A during the 2025-26 campaign and remains under contract with Sassuolo for another two years, but the latest report suggests a summer departure is increasingly possible. The former Hibs youngster, who was linked with a Sunderland transfer four seasons ago, also made his senior Scotland debut against Liechtenstein last year after previously representing his country at youth level. Sunderland’s reported interest comes as Florent Ghisolfi continues working to strengthen the left side of Régis Le Bris’ squad. The Black Cats have also been pursuing Toulouse defender Dayann Methalie this summer, with the highly-rated Frenchman capable of operating at left-back or on the left side of central defence. Doig would offer considerably more senior experience despite still being only 24, having already accumulated several seasons of football in Serie A.
