Ian Edwards has been praised for his work as Racing and Wagering WA’s chief executive across the past six years after announcing his resignation on Friday. Edwards, previously the chief financial officer from 2017 to 2020, is understood to have be taking employment at another organisation when he completes his tenure on November 13. The departing boss said he was “incredibly proud” of what had been achieved at RWWA. “Serving as RWWA CEO has been one of the greatest privileges of my career,” Edwards said. “I have had the opportunity to work alongside passionate and dedicated people who care deeply about our industry and its future.” Prior to working at RWWA, Edwards had previously been Community News Group’s chief financial officer and a senior finance manager at BankWest. Chair Karen Farley said Edwards was instrumental in developing new broadcast partnerships and the inception of Racing WA TV. “Just as importantly, Ian has strengthened RWWA from the inside out, helping build a more capable, connected and strategically-focused organisation,” she said. “Through investment in our people, culture, workplaces and long-term planning, he has positioned RWWA for the future.” Shadow Minister for Racing and Gaming Lachlan Hunter said Government must now act quickly to ensure “certainty and stability” for the industry amidst an ongoing Financial Sustainability and Governance Review. “I thank Mr Edwards for his service to RWWA and to Western Australian racing,” Hunter said. “However, his departure adds another layer of uncertainty at a time when racing participants are already waiting for answers about the future of their industry. “The Cook Labor Government must ensure this leadership change does not result in further delays, instability or uncertainty surrounding the current review. “The Minister needs to clearly explain the arrangements for stable leadership at RWWA, provide assurance that the review remains on track and, most importantly, give the industry confidence about what comes next.” Don Punch recently became the Racing and Gaming Minister when Paul Papalia vacated the position and performed a welcome address at last Saturday’s WA Racing Hall of Fame. Punch said there would be no delays to the review and expected a “smooth transition” to new leadership at RWWA. “I would like to thank Ian Edwards for his contribution as CEO of Racing and Wagering WA and the racing industry over the past six years,” Punch said. “The Government recognises the racing industry is facing challenges and is committed to working towards improved certainty regarding the future of the industry. “The independent review continues to progress, to ensure the industry is well placed for the future, ensuring the Western Australian racing industry has a framework for long-term sustainability, including appropriate revenue streams. “The reviewers will continue to engage with RWWA while undertaking the review.
