Chelsea were made to work for their place in the third round of the Carabao Cup, defeating a resilient Luton Town side 2-0 at Stamford Bridge courtesy of a goal from Danny Welbeck and an own goal from Hakeem Odoffin. The home side got on the front foot from minute one, keeping the Hatters boxed in for large parts of the first half. Despite this, they were unable to find a way past Josh Keeley in the opening 45 minutes, as the Luton backline worked incredibly hard to keep this game deadlocked at the break. But Chelsea would make the breakthrough in the 49th minute as Danny Welbeck headed home a Malo Gusto cross to give his side the lead and hand himself a first goal for his new team. Story of the match: Chelsea upped the tempo ten minutes in as Cole Palmer linked up wonderfully with Estêvão, the Brazilian producing a neat flick to open up the space for the Englishman to shoot. That is exactly what he did, forcing Josh Keeley into a strong save before denying the forward once again on the rebound; Luton's keeper would have been expecting a busy night at the Bridge. Keeley was back in action minutes later after Estêvão won a free kick on the edge of the box. Reece James stepped up to take it, firing a powerful effort towards the bottom right that forced Keeley to shift and get low to make another instinctive save. Standing their ground firmly in the opening twenty minutes, Luton were beginning to frustrate Chelsea as the Blues' chances had slightly dried up since James' close effort. The hosts had their best chance of the game so far in the 38th minute as Valentín Barco, making his competitive debut in Chelsea colours, slipped a brilliantly weighted pass through to Estêvão. It really looked to be the opportunity he had waited patiently for, but the strike was anything but patient, dragging the effort wide of goal. Morgan Rogers was next to come within inches of giving his side the lead. Estêvão's run was not tracked down the right as the Brazilian played it across to Rogers, whose effort rattled off the crossbar to keep the game in the balance. Luton had remained resilient in this first half, entering the break level much to the pleasure of the away end, who sounded their appreciation of their side's defensive efforts in the second half. It had been a frustrating half for the Blues; plenty of efforts at goal, but being held at bay by Jack Wilshere's men. They would have been under no illusions that the first goal would change everything in this tie, as they would have to pick up where they left off in the second half. Chelsea got their reward for all their hard work less than five minutes into the second half as Danny Welbeck got off the mark in his first competitive fixture for his new club. Gusto's run down the right caught his man off guard, allowing the Frenchman to deliver an inviting cross into the box that was headed into the back of the net by the striker to finally breach the Luton defence. The Blues had all the momentum now as they looked to build on their lead and ensure there was no way back into this tie for their opposition. Despite this, Luton did not let the opening goal knock their confidence as they swiftly got into their resilient shape, beginning to absorb even more sustained pressure from those in blue. The pressure simply did not let up from Chelsea as they got their second of the evening with ten minutes to play, which seemed to secure the victory for Xabi Alonso's men. Estêvão had enjoyed a busy night at the Bridge and finally got rewarded for his relentlessness down the right. His effort, struck towards goal, was turned in by Hakeem Odoffin; a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time for the centre back as Chelsea looked out of sight. A flurry of late Chelsea chances did not alter the scoreline, although they came very close to doing so when substitute Jamie Gittens struck the post. Despite this, it was Chelsea's evening as they made it two victories in two to kick off the season. Luton had given a fantastic account of themselves on the night, proving why they are one of the favourites to get promoted up to the Championship this season. Player Of The Match - Valentín Barco Making his competitive debut for Chelsea after being an unused substitute at Craven Cottage on Monday, Barco had an impressive first outing in Chelsea blue. The Argentine looked incredibly comfortable on the ball and made multiple line-breaking passes, showing shades of why he has been recognised as one of Europe's brightest young playmaking talents. He showed a willingness within his work rate, moving into space as often as he could and enjoying the most touches of any player on the pitch over the ninety minutes. A positive display from Barco against the Hatters, who will be hoping to break into the starting squad should he be given the chance.
