Celtic are reportedly considering a move for experienced Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.
The Hoops have yet to bring in a replacement for Kasper Schmeichel, with Viljami Sinisalo beginning the campaign as Martin O’Neill’s first-choice and inheriting the No.1 shirt.
However, Celtic’s search for another goalkeeper appears to be continuing and the Daily Mail report that Johnstone has emerged as an option.
The 33-year-old looks set to leave Wolves after falling down the pecking order at Molineux. He made 13 Premier League appearances last season before undergoing surgery on an injury suffered during an EFL Cup tie in March.
Wolves are now poised to complete the £1.3million signing of Joao Virginia, which could pave the way for Johnstone’s departure. Any fee for the England international would be expected to exceed the amount being paid for Virginia.
Johnstone would bring considerable top-flight experience to Celtic and his arrival would provide serious competition for Sinisalo, who has been entrusted with the gloves during the opening weeks of the season.
Celtic have been linked with several goalkeepers throughout the window. Zenit St Petersburg stopper Denis Adamov is the latest name to emerge, while Blackburn Rovers’ Balazs Toth has also been strongly linked.
Reports previously suggested talks over Toth were advanced, although Blackburn boss Tony Mowbray played down those claims by insisting the Championship club had received no bids.
