Over the last week or so, there has been a surprising amount of talk regarding a shock return to Anfield for Trent Alexander-Arnold, and it feels like there is an attempt to soften us to the idea of it. The right-back left the club in a highly charged, controversial way, and it’s safe to say the reaction from supporters was emotional. This is not a criticism – football is an emotional game and part of why we love it – but could he ever be welcomed back with open arms? I’m of the opinion that, if Liverpool and Real Madrid were to arrange a loan for him to come back to Anfield, he’d be forgiven, even if this would not necessarily happen. In a recent interview with the Mirror, Alexander-Arnold shared what life has been like for him recently, and even sympathised with Liverpool fans over the reaction we all had to his exit. He said that he understood that supporters didn’t like that all corners of the media and the internet were trying to tell fans how they should be reacting. While he might not have said it outright, I got the sense from the interview that he misses Liverpool, Anfield and the life he chose to give up to make a free transfer to Real Madrid, where he is now on €600,000 per week wages. Alexander-Arnold said: “I still watch every game, I support them. I want to see them do well. I enjoy watching them, and there will always be a place in my heart for Liverpool, no matter what. “It is home to me. It’s the place that gave me the opportunities to go and do what I’ve done and I will always love it. Grass isn’t greener on the other side, no matter how it may look so from afar. Are Liverpool fans being softened to the idea of a Trent Alexander-Arnold return? There has been what I would describe as a surprising amount of talk about the fullback returning to Anfield of late, with the sense online being that there is an attempt to ‘float’ the idea – even hypothetically – to supporters. She said: “I think maybe they should cut their losses and just explore the Trent situation. I’m not saying you’ve got to sign him immediately – let’s just explore this. Because Real Madrid have signed another right-back in Denzel Dumfries – that is not good news for Trent.” John Gibbons from the Anfield Wrap wrote on Twitter about how it’s quite interesting that instead of conducting his interview with a sports reporter, Alexander-Arnold made his tell-all reveal to a “showbiz reporter”, suggesting the Scouser might be open to the idea of returning to Anfield. This is a really interesting interview for loads of reasons. He’s done it with a showbiz reporter rather than a sports writer and there is very little on Madrid, it’s all about his relationship with Liverpool. So what might the objective of it be? I am open to the idea, although something would need to happen regarding the incredible amount of money Real Madrid are paying him. Liverpool and its supporters extending him an olive branch is one thing, but there is no way that he returns to Anfield after everything that has happened only to earn €600k-a-week (over £500k-a-week). But even then, that point right now is secondary. Liverpool would need to know with certainty that Alexander-Arnold would be welcome home by supporters, and I imagine part of that would require some type of peace-making offering to supporters. Because this whole saga boils down to the fact that supporters feel disrespected by how Alexander-Arnold engineered his transfer to Madrid by running down his contract.
