The Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Tala, who presented one of the trophies, was introduced as the ‘president of the Turkish republic of northern Cyprus’, a disputed region which is only recognised by Turkey. The FIA initially fined Turkey’s motor sport organisation $5 million but later halved it, though it remains one of the largest fines ever issued in F1.
