Mahomes to sit against Seahawks as Reid tabs Nussmeier for start in preseason finale KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Kansas City Chiefs fans are set to get an extended look at seventh-round rookie quarterback Garrett Nussmeier during Friday’s preseason finale. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid announced on Wednesday that star quarterback Patrick Mahomes will continue to be held out of the preseason as he gears up for a regular-season return from his torn ACL. Fourth-string quarterback Chris Oladokun will not play Friday as he is still in concussion protocol, Reid said. Because of that, Nussmeier is in line to get a rare start and full game of play for a preseason game. “The young kid is going to go. Nuss is going to go and start the game,” Reid said Wednesday. “Those two (Nussmeier and Oladokun) were going to split.” Reid said Nussmeier has done a nice job in training camp and throughout the preseason. “I’ve thrown him right into the fire with the first group,” Reid said of Nussmeier, who has gotten reps with starters in practice this week. “It didn’t look like a big shock to him. He looked like he stepped in, took it on and had good leadership and tempo in and out of the huddle. “It was a positive for him and I think it’ll pay off for him down the road.” In his first two preseason games, Nussmeier has played well, but he’s yet to throw a touchdown pass. In Week 1, Nussmeier completed 13 of his 19 passes against the Los Angeles Rams for 98 yards. Last week, Nussmeier went 9 for 17 for 74 yards against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With Mahomes not playing against the Seahawks on Friday, it’ll wrap up the first preseason of his career in which he hasn’t played in a preseason game. That means his first game action since tearing his ACL on Dec. 14, 2025, could be in primetime Week 1 against the Denver Broncos.
