Longtime NESN commentator Tom Caron has extended his contract with the network, as NESN continues to lock in its broadcast team. Caron, who is from Maine, first joined NESN as the host of the sports magazine Front Row in 1995. Caron has since greatly expanded his role at the network. He currently serves as the Red Sox pregame and postgame host and a play-by-play announcer for NESN’s coverage of the annual college hockey “Beanpot” tournament and the Hockey East championship. He is also the host of NESN’s baseball podcast 310 to Left. He will continue in these roles under this extension. “NESN has been my professional home since 1995, and I’m honored to continue working alongside so many talented people who care deeply about serving New England sports fans,” Caron said in a statement. “Covering the Red Sox is a responsibility I never take for granted, and I look forward to more seasons of telling the stories that make this team and its fanbase so special.” During his career, which began at WPTZ-TV in Plattsburgh, New York, Caron has won 13 New England Emmy Awards and a New York State Broadcasters Award. NESN, whose Red Sox broadcast ranked 11th in Awful Announcing’s local MLB broadcast rankings, has been quietly locking in its commentators to extensions. Lead play-by-play announcer Dave O’Brien re-signed through the 2028 season earlier in August, though he will reduce his workload. Many Red Sox fans remember when NESN decided not to renew longtime play-by-play announcer Don Orsillo’s contract after the 2015 season. Orsillo has since moved to the Padres, whose broadcast was ranked first in Awful Announcing’s broadcaster rankings. NESN’s recent extensions suggest the network is taking a different approach to its broadcast team than it did a decade ago.
