Carrow Road returns conjure up fond family memories for Dons boss Warne
The MK Dons boss will have a moment to remember his dad when he returns to Carrow Road on Saturday
Paul Warne gets to live out his boyhood dreams whenever he goes back to Carrow Road to face Norwich City.
Though he is no stranger the away team dugout nowadays, walking into the ground he watched football growing up still gives him a special feeling and one which reminds him of of his dad Russell, who died in 2019.
Together they would watch the Canaries, and now Warne’s returns remind him of those days even more.
This Saturday, he gets to do it again, this time with MK Dons in the Carabao Cup first round, and he will be doing so in front of plenty of friends and family, including his mum, he is bringing along with him.
“It’s still a big deal, but it gets more diluted the more I’ve done it,” he said. “Every time I go back, I always think about my dad when I’m there.
“When I get there, I get to walk out on the pitch on my own, when it’s over, I’ll speak to the press and then I’ll walk around the pitch on my own, it’s brilliant. It’s a joy.
“The first time I played there, it was a massive deal. It was a local cup final, I’ll just throw that out there!
“The last time I was going though I got sacked so I might not answer the phone to the owner in the next couple of days!”
His support for Norwich has never been a taboo for the Dons boss, though his record against them does not make for good reading, with one win and six defeats in seven games.
“I’ll openly admit I’m a Norwich fan,” he said. “I don’t think there’s any shame in admitting where your allegiances are, I’m not embarrassed by it. I’ll look forward to getting my accent back , it comes back in a heartbeat!
“My mum is coming, my niece is coming, my brother is coming, my wife, my best mates, they’re all coming. I think I’ve got about 30, 40 people going! It’s always a brilliant thing for me, selfishly.”
